The US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, has warned that Russia is unlikely to halt its actions in the Kharkiv region and will attempt to establish a buffer zone along its border with Ukraine. Russian forces began making advances into Ukrainian territory on May 10, but have been met with resistance from Kiev’s soldiers. Despite this temporary slowdown in the offensive, Austin emphasized that Russia is expected to continue its efforts to advance further in order to create a buffer zone as outlined by Vladimir Putin.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has also highlighted the importance of air defense systems and additional measures to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian aggression. He has expressed a need for stronger diplomatic efforts and international support to hold Russia accountable for its actions.

Despite these challenges, Ukrainian defenders have shown great courage and are utilizing the resources provided by the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine. In Kharkiv Oblast, Ukrainian forces maintain control over approximately 60% of Vovchansk, a town largely abandoned by civilians due to ongoing clashes in the area. Meanwhile, along the eastern front, Russian forces have seized control of the village of Bilohorivka according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

In addition to these military actions, Russia has repeatedly mentioned its need for territories under Moscow’s control not to be targeted by Ukrainian artillery and drones. This has added an extra layer of tension to an already volatile situation in Kharkiv Oblast.
