On Friday night, the largest hydroelectric power station in Ukraine was hit by eight Russian missiles, according to the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office. This attack was part of a massive nighttime assault that left at least five people dead and caused widespread power cuts. The DniproHES power plant in Zaporizhia was one of the targets hit by the missiles.

The attacks on Ukraine were claimed to be a response to recent military operations against Russian border regions. The strikes targeted energy and military-industrial infrastructures, railway junctions, and arsenals. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the delay in Western aid to Ukraine, as American assistance had been blocked due to political rivalries and EU aid had fallen behind schedule.

Over 60 Shahed drones and nearly 90 missiles of various types were launched at Ukraine during the night. These targets included power plants, high voltage lines, a hydroelectric dam, residences, and even a trolleybus. The attacks resulted in casualties, injuries, power cuts in seven regions, and damage to numerous installations.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attacks while the White House called for Congressional Republicans to lift their blockage of American military aid to Kyiv. The Ukrainian government emphasized the importance of the DniproHES hydroelectric plant, which supplies electricity to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe. The attacks on Ukraine have caused significant damage and disruption to the country’s infrastructure.

Ukraine has been facing numerous challenges due to its conflict with Russia since 2014. The country has been working tirelessly to rebuild its infrastructure after years of destruction caused by Russian aggression.

The latest attack on Ukraine highlights how fragile peace is in this region despite international efforts towards peace negotiations.

It is crucial that global leaders take immediate action against these attacks and work towards finding a lasting solution for this conflict so that innocent lives are not lost anymore.
