Rochester-based OLEDWorks LLC has received an OTA of approximately $8.6 million from the U.S government to create high-performance organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays for both consumer and defense uses. The microdisplay is aimed at head-mounted display applications within the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality markets.

John Hamer, co-Founder and COO of OLEDWorks, stated that their task is to design a high-resolution, full-color OLED microdisplay with high levels of brightness. The new display will integrate the multi-stack OLED manufacturing processes used in their Aachen, Germany facility, which are already in high-volume production and meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry.

According to company leaders, by combining full-color output with high brightness levels and long lifespan, users will be able to view full-color information in a transparent environment even in direct sunlight conditions. CEO David DeJoy expressed excitement about adding a third OLED microdisplay product to their roadmap, offering another high-brightness OLED microdisplay solution to Tier-I companies in the AR/VR product sector.

Congressman Joe Morelle praised OLEDWorks for keeping Rochester at the forefront of high-tech lighting technologies and manufacturing. This program is seen as a validation of their research and development efforts in applying multi-stack OLED technology to OLED microdisplays for defense and high-volume consumer applications.
