Microsoft and OpenAI are currently in the fifth and final phase of developing an artificial intelligence supercomputer known as “Stargate,” with a reported cost of up to $100 billion. The project is part of a larger initiative to build a series of supercomputers over the next six years. One of the challenges in AI development is the shortage of graphics processing units (GPUs), which are essential for processing data in AI models. The demand for GPUs has risen dramatically due to the generative AI boom, creating a bottleneck in the supply chain.

To address this challenge, Nvidia, a leading manufacturer of AI chips, has recently launched its latest chip, the Blackwell B200, with a price tag ranging from $30,000 to $40,000 per unit. The company has invested over $10 billion in research and development for this chip, which surpasses all others in performance. However, Nvidia’s dominance in the market has prompted several technology companies to join forces to create the “United Acceleration Foundation,” aimed at challenging Nvidia’s hardware and software supremacy in AI.

Despite this competition, Microsoft and OpenAI remain committed to developing Stargate and other supercomputers. Their collaboration signifies a significant investment in the future of artificial intelligence with the potential to revolutionize the industry.
