Los Angeles County is experiencing a rise in mpox cases, with 10 new cases reported in the past two weeks. This is up from a countywide average of less than two cases per week in the preceding several weeks. Health officials are strongly urging at-risk residents to take preventative measures to stop the spread of the virus.
One of the first signs that someone may have mpox is a new, unexplained rash. This can be similar to the flu, but it’s important to note that mpox is not caused by the same virus that causes flu or COVID-19. In fact, mpox does not mutate as quickly as those viruses, so the same two-shot vaccine series remains effective.
At-risk groups for mpox include men who have sex with other men, individuals who engage in commercial or transactional sex work, and those living with HIV. Anyone who develops unusual sores that look like pimples or blisters, fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, or swelling of lymph nodes should get tested for mpox.
To prevent spreading the virus through close contact with bodily fluids and shared bedding or respiratory droplets transmitted through kissing, coughing, sneezing, and skin-to-skin contact, health officials recommend wearing more clothing in social settings like dance clubs and parties.
There are several places where people can get vaccinated against mpox in Los Angeles County. They can visit myturn.ca.gov or any of the 10 sexual health clinics located at public health centers across the county. A mobile vaccine team will also be present at various Pride events this month.
It’s important for everyone to stay vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from getting infected with mpox during this summer season when people are more active socially and sexually.
