In beta testing, Spotify has introduced a new AI-generated playlist feature that allows users to create customized playlists based on written prompts. This feature is an extension of the platform’s AI DJ feature and goes beyond standard requests like genre or time frame. With this new feature, users can create highly specific playlists based on unique prompts such as “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.”

The concept of AI-generated playlists first emerged in October 2023, when reverse engineers discovered code in Spotify’s app referencing AI-based playlists. While Spotify initially remained silent on the matter, they confirmed in December 2023 that they were testing the feature. Playlist prompts can cover a wide range of topics including activities, animals, places, movie characters, colors, and emojis.

Spotify recommends using prompts that combine artists, moods, genres, and decades to achieve the best results with AI-generated playlists. The company also takes into account the user’s music taste to customize the playlists. Users can further refine the playlists by giving voice commands like “more pop” or “less upbeat,” and songs can easily be removed from the playlist by swiping left. This new feature is expected to revolutionize how users create and listen to music on Spotify.
