The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) Food Safety Branch has allowed King’s Chinese BBQ 5 (DBA General’s Chinese BBQ) to reopen after issuing a green “Pass” placard during a follow-up inspection on April 8, 2024. This decision comes after an initial complaint inspection on April 4, 2024, revealed an active cockroach infestation, resulting in the establishment being closed with a red placard issued.

During the follow-up inspection, only two dying roaches were observed on the floor, with no other pest activity detected within or around kitchen equipment. The food establishment has taken steps to address the issue by contracting a professional pest control company to conduct weekly treatments for the next month. The DOH will conduct an unannounced follow-up inspection to ensure continued compliance with pest prevention measures.

The DOH has set parameters for the establishment to meet, including working with a pest control company for a month to conduct weekly treatments and ensuring thorough cleaning under kitchen equipment to eliminate pest attractants. The Food Safety Branch of the DOH is committed to protecting the health of residents and visitors through education of food industry workers and regulation of food establishments statewide.

In addition to routine health inspections of food establishments where products are prepared, manufactured, distributed or sold, as well as investigating sources of foodborne illnesses and potential adulteration, the DOH’s food safety specialists work closely with business owners and food service workers to ensure safe food preparation and hygiene practices are upheld. For restaurant inspection reports in Maui, individuals can contact the Maui Food Safety Branch or visit the department’s placarding program website for more information.
