U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat Congressman from Texas, has become the first to publicly call on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race. Doggett emphasized that despite Biden’s victory over former President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, he should not pave the way for Trump in the next election by running again.
While White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre mentioned that President Biden is facing a cold but is firm on continuing his reelection campaign, other Democrats have criticized his performance in the debate against Trump. However, only U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse expressed concern over Biden’s appearance and acknowledged the need for transparency regarding his condition.
Despite this call for withdrawal, Senate leader Chuck Schumer defended President Biden’s fitness to serve by highlighting the achievements made over the past four years. The Democratic National Committee is expected to nominate Biden as its candidate in mid-July, with plans for an August convention in Chicago. This week, President Biden is set to speak with Democratic governors and other party leaders as he continues his campaign towards reelection.
