The Kansas City Current secured a 1-0 win over the Utah Royals in their first-ever match against the expansion side, thanks to a goal from Elizabeth Ball, who became the team’s record-breaking 15th goal scorer. Ball scored off a header from Claire Hutton in the 58th minute, setting a new NWSL record for the Current for the most goal scorers in a season in just 11 matches.

Ball entered the match in the 25th minute as a substitute for Gabby Robinson, who suffered a non-contact right knee injury. After scoring the decisive goal, Ball ran to the touchline to hug Robinson, who will be evaluated for her injury once the team returns to Kansas City. The game saw a VAR check for a potential penalty on a shot by Michelle Cooper, but it was ruled that no penalty was committed.

Despite only holding 45% possession, Kansas City managed to take 24 shots (eight on target) compared to Utah’s four shots. Utah goalkeeper Mandy Haught made six saves, while KC’s AD Franch made two saves. Striker Temwa Chawinga led the team with nine shots, with Debinha following closely with five shots. Bia Zaneratto also returned from injury in the final 20 minutes of the match.

With this win, Kansas City remains undefeated through their first 11 matches of the season, holding a record of 7-0-4 and sitting in second place in the NWSL standings.
