A 22-year-old male student in Hanoi was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a rare condition that typically affects middle-aged individuals. The patient had struggled with obesity since childhood and had been unsuccessful in his attempts to lose weight. He sought medical help at the Central Endocrine Hospital, where he was diagnosed with the disease after experiencing symptoms such as tiredness, increased thirst, and frequent urination.

Dr. Nguyen Manh Tuan from the Department of Adult Endocrinology noted that this was a rare case at the hospital, as type 2 diabetes typically occurs in middle-aged individuals. He explained that at the age of 22, the main risk factor for type 2 diabetes is obesity, along with a diet high in carbohydrates and fat, and lack of exercise. Dr. Tuan emphasized the importance of controlling blood sugar with insulin and setting weight control goals for the patient.

While medical treatment is necessary for managing type 2 diabetes, diet and exercise play a significant role in overall treatment success. Dr. Tuan highlighted the impact of a suitable diet and exercise plan on managing type 2 diabetes effectively. Currently, young individuals are increasingly affected by type 2 diabetes due to factors such as obesity, genetics, stress, and poor diet choices.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, including approximately 7 million individuals in Vietnam alone. The prevalence of pre-diabetes is also significant, with over half of cases going undiagnosed. To prevent both obesity and diabetes, healthcare professionals recommend maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and seeking medical attention for any unusual symptoms promptly.

In conclusion, early detection and treatment are critical to managing diabetes effectively and improving overall health outcomes for those affected by this chronic condition. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits such as maintaining a balanced dietary regimen and engaging in regular physical activity can help reduce one’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes or other related complications associated with it.
