A 38-year-old woman recently visited Medlatec General Hospital for a routine health check and was discovered to be positive for six different types of parasites, which is an uncommon occurrence. The initial tests, including an abdominal ultrasound and basic blood tests, revealed liver damage and positive results for roundworms, strongyloides, and various liver flukes. Further scans showed nodular lesions in the liver, spleen, and lung, indicating internal organ damage caused by the parasites. The patient was then transferred to the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital for treatment.

Dr. Ngo Chi Cuong, Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Medlatec General Hospital stated that this case is unusual as the patient did not exhibit any typical symptoms of illness. Regular health check-ups played a crucial role in detecting the disease early and initiating prompt treatment. The doctor attributed the cause of the parasitic infection to the patient’s dietary habits and contact with animals.

Liver fluke infection can lead to severe complications if left untreated such as liver abscess and cholecystitis. Symptoms may initially be subtle like loss of appetite and fatigue but can progress to more serious conditions. Infection with roundworms from cats and dogs can result in persistent itching and neurological issues making it imperative to address the infection promptly.

Following this case doctors strongly recommend adhering to proper dietary hygiene practices to prevent helminth diseases such as cooking food thoroughly, avoiding consumption of undercooked or raw meat, deworming regularly maintaining good hygiene when handling food and water as well as seeking medical attention if parasitic symptoms are suspected are essential steps in preventing and managing parasitic infections.
