San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safaí had planned a celebration to honor Queer LifeSpace, a nonprofit providing mental health care to LGBTQIA+ clients. However, the clinic’s executive director, Ryan MacCarrigan, used the event to rally against displacement due to alleged excessive fees and penalties from the landlord threatening unjust eviction.

MacCarrigan accused the property managers of showing the clinic’s space to other prospective tenants in violation of the lease agreement. He believes the landlord is committing fraud and making false claims about owed money. The clinic’s supporters gathered for the midday event to show solidarity with MacCarrigan and Queer LifeSpace.

According to MacCarrigan, the landlord provided numbers without justification for charges, leading to a dispute over the legitimacy of the fees. The clinic refused to comply with what they considered unreasonable demands, and in response, faced threats of eviction. The situation has left Queer LifeSpace in a vulnerable position, struggling to navigate a potential displacement from its long-standing location in the Castro.
