The qubit, or quantum bit, is the basic unit of information in quantum computing and can represent 0, 1, or a proportion of both in superposition. However, this delicate superposition can be easily disrupted by external noise, making quantum computing more error-prone than classical computing.

To enhance the quality of qubits, two approaches have been adopted: improving qubit quality and operation, and using logical qubits by combining multiple physical qubits into more reliable virtual qubits. Microsoft and Quantinuum have utilized ion trap hardware to create highly reliable logical qubits, achieving an 800-fold improvement in error rates by combining just 30 physical qubits into four logical qubits in the Quantinuum machine.

This advancement in qubit virtualization represents a fundamental milestone in error correction in quantum computing. The combination of advanced error diagnosis, computational execution rejection, and error correction capabilities has enabled error correction without destroying logical qubits. This achievement is comparable to using noise-canceling headphones to eliminate ambient noise, significantly improving the reliability of logical qubits.
