As fair season approaches in Wisconsin, the Department of Health Services is urging people to take precautions when interacting with animals at fairs and petting zoos. State Public Health Veterinarian Angie Maxted emphasizes the importance of washing hands after contact with animals or being in areas where animals are present as a simple way to prevent disease transmission.

The DHS advises washing hands with soap and warm water or using hand sanitizer after touching animals or leaving areas with animals. It is also important to stay away from sick animals and areas where sick animals are present, as well as to wash clothes and shoes worn around animals to prevent spreading diseases into the home. If feeling sick, it is best to stay home to prevent the spread of illness.

Collaboration between the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection and the Department of Health Services aims to provide information on preventing highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) and reducing the risk of infection for humans and animals. It is crucial to take precautions when touching animals during fair season, petting zoos, or any time around animals to avoid potential infections.
