Prisma Health is currently investing $41 million to upgrade their healthcare system with new smart beds. These Hillrom smart beds will replace approximately 1,500 inpatient beds and enhance the overall patient experience. The smart beds will be utilized by Prisma’s staff in various departments including the intensive care unit, labor and delivery, medical and surgical units, and bariatrics to provide improved care for patients.

The Hillrom smart beds come equipped with Hercules patient repositioning technology, which allows caregivers to safely reposition patients with ease. These advanced beds also feature technology geared towards fall prevention, pressure injury reduction, increased patient comfort, and improved communication. In addition to these features, the smart beds include floor projections displaying bed alarm status, position and side rails, powered transport with stop-and-turn controls, a fifth wheel for portability, a built-in USB port for patient devices, and illuminated side rails and under-bed lights.

Mark O’Halla, the president and CEO of Prisma Health emphasized that this investment highlights the organization’s dedication to prioritizing patient safety and satisfaction. O’Halla stated that integrating the cutting-edge technology of these smart beds will not only streamline clinical workflows and reduce manual tasks but also significantly reduce the risk of injury to both caregivers and patients. This will enable healthcare team members to deliver more efficient, accurate, and compassionate care leading to improved patient outcomes.

The project to implement the new smart beds is currently underway at Prisma Health facilities. It is expected to be completed by mid-September.
