ITOCHU Corporation, a global trading and import/export company based in Japan, has recently announced a partnership with Amogy, a company that provides advanced ammonia-to-power solutions. The two companies aim to explore the potential use of Amogy’s technology on ITOCHU’s maritime vessels.

Amogy has developed a modular system that converts liquid ammonia into electrical power through a process that involves breaking down ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen. The hydrogen is then used in a fuel cell to generate electricity on board a vessel. Together, Amogy and ITOCHU will assess opportunities to implement this system on vessels owned, operated, or chartered by ITOCHU.

The partnership between the two companies extends beyond just implementing Amogy’s technology on vessels. They will collaborate closely to identify suitable vessels, provide guidance on retrofitting existing vessels or designing new ones, and offer technical expertise and project planning. This partnership may also extend to other projects in the ammonia and hydrogen value chain, including ammonia bunkering projects, advisory services, equipment utilization, and collaborations in ammonia supply.

Seonghoon Woo, CEO at Amogy expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership and the opportunity to work with ITOCHU on sustainable energy solutions for the maritime industry. He stressed the importance of driving innovation and contributing to a greener future. Takeo Akamatsu, General Manager of Green Innovation Business Unit at ITOCHU shared his excitement about the collaboration and the potential for Amogy’s technology to be part of their integrated project for using ammonia as a marine fuel.
