In recent news, the Memphis Police Department has received $2 million in federal grants to enhance their technologies. This announcement was made by Rep. Steve Cohen at a press conference, where he emphasized the importance of these upgrades in solving crimes. Cohen specifically mentioned Tyre Nichols, whose beating was captured by additional lights and cameras that were funded through this program.

During the press conference, Cohen, Memphis Mayor Paul Young, and interim Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis came together to discuss how this funding will be utilized to support policing efforts in the city. Davis emphasized the need for technology to supplement the department’s manpower, stating that it can serve as a force multiplier to help officers work smarter, not harder.

The funds will be allocated towards acquiring upgraded crime surveillance equipment and enhancing officer equipment. One of the key upgrades mentioned by Davis is the implementation of body-worn cameras that automatically trigger when certain conditions are met, such as the presence of blue lights or the removal of weapons from officer’s holsters. This investment is expected to improve the department’s ability to monitor and respond to criminal activity in the community.

The Sentinel Surveillance Cameras Project will receive $963,000 of the grant money, while the remaining $969,000 will be used for officer equipment upgrades. This investment is expected to have a significant impact on public safety in Memphis and provide more efficient solutions for law enforcement officials.

Overall, this grant is a vital step forward for Memphis Police Department as it continues its commitment to providing better service and protection for its citizens through advanced technology solutions.
