In recent months, Pike County in eastern Kentucky has faced a “mental health crisis,” with an alarming surge in suicides. In just the last 30 days, at least 8 people have taken their own lives, a significant increase compared to the 8 suicides reported in the entire year of 2023.
Pike County Director of Public Health, Tammy Riley, has highlighted some commonalities among the recent suicides – all were adults ranging from their 30s to 80s, primarily male, and all used firearms as the method. To address this crisis, officials are coming together from multiple agencies to tackle the issue.
The Mountain Comprehensive Care Center is serving as the primary provider of mental health services in Pike County and is actively involved in the efforts. Collaboration with other agencies such as the Pike County Coroner’s Office and resources from the Kentucky Department of Public Health are being utilized to address this urgent issue.
To raise awareness about available resources for those in need of mental health support, Pike County is planning to host several events in the near future. Riley emphasized that it is crucial for individuals experiencing mental distress to utilize the 9-8-8 crisis hotline, which is available 24/7 for assistance and support. By calling or texting 988, individuals can speak to trained professionals who can offer help and guidance during difficult times.
