Edmundo Sosa has been filling in as the primary shortstop for the Phillies during Trea Turner’s rehabilitation, and he has been performing exceptionally well. In his absence, Sosa has hit .357 with three doubles, two triples, a home run, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored in just 15 games. His overall season batting average is .323, and his slash line as a Phillie is .271/.321/.468 in 432 plate appearances.

Despite not being expected to return until the next series, Turner has been making progress in his recovery. On their road trip to Colorado and San Francisco, he joined the team and participated in distance running, fielding ground balls, and batting practice at Coors Field. The Phillies plan to have him engage in more activities on Saturday, including hitting early on the field and running at 90% speed.

Manager Rob Thomson mentioned that Saturday will be a heavy day for Turner’s rehab. If he responds well to the weekend’s work, he will be running the bases at full speed in San Francisco. However, the Phillies are being cautious with Turner’s recovery to minimize the risk of re-injury as hamstrings can be tricky to rehabilitate. In any case, Sosa’s impressive performance will continue to keep him in the starting lineup while Turner continues to recover.
