In recent months, the Peruvian government has announced plans to build a spaceport in Piura. The project, known as Spaceport, aims to facilitate the launches of rockets and spacecraft for orbital and suborbital flights. This new facility will offer a 30% fuel saving which translates to a 30% increase in cargo capacity for these flights.

The Private Investment Promotion Agency (Porinversión) is responsible for defining the management plan to make this spaceport a reality, along with the Peruvian Air Force (FAP) and the Ministry of Defense. The facility will include ground platforms, a control center, preparation hangars, and runways, all located away from populated areas.

The construction of this new spaceport will bring us closer to the sky and beyond, opening up new possibilities for exploration and discovery. The ancient Peruvians were known to observe the stars whether for religious purposes or practical reasons such as creating calendars and planning cities. Astronomy has always been present in their culture, and now there is a new opportunity for its advancement with this future spaceport.

This new facility is also expected to contribute to space tourism, which is becoming increasingly popular with companies like Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin, and SpaceX offering suborbital flights. Another company, World View Enterprises, specializes in balloon travel that allows passengers to view the curvature of the Earth from a high altitude.

In terms of education and technology, projects like “CubeSats in Peru” have already been implemented to train students in satellite assembly and ground station operations. The collaboration with NASA and the United States Space Command Commission will further enhance technological research and development in Peru. Additionally
