In Pennsylvania, the Office of Outdoor Recreation, under the leadership of Director Nathan Reigner, has requested additional financial assistance from lawmakers to support Governor Josh Shapiro’s statewide tourism initiative. During a presentation to two House committees, Reigner highlighted the substantial contribution of the outdoor recreation industry to the state’s GDP. In 2022, the industry accounted for $17 billion, which represents 2% of the total GDP.

The office is located within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and its primary objective is to act as a central point for government agencies involved in outdoor-focused economic development. However, the office does not directly handle funding. Reigner emphasized the importance of enhancing connectivity between state agencies, rural communities, and entrepreneurs to foster growth within the outdoor economy.

Despite its potential for growth, challenges such as insufficient staffing and complex grant applications have hindered progress and connection in rural areas. For instance, the Pennsylvania Wilds region faced difficulties in meeting job creation requirements for a significant federal grant. This highlighted a gap between federal policies and specific needs in Pennsylvania.

Reigner stressed that increased support is needed for local economic development groups to maximize existing opportunities and bolster Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreation sector. He also emphasized that collaboration between stakeholders is crucial to achieving long-term success in this industry.

Overall, Reigner believes that with increased support and collaboration between stakeholders, Pennsylvania can continue to grow its outdoor recreation sector and contribute even more significantly to its economy.
