The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is calling on Member States to prioritize gender, leadership, and nurse training in the Americas for International Nurses Day. Although women make up a majority of the health workforce globally and in the region, they still face barriers to accessing job opportunities and are often paid less than their male counterparts.

PAHO’s Policy on the Health Workforce 2030: Strengthening Human Resources for Health to Achieve Resilient Health Systems (CD60/6) highlights the importance of incorporating a gender perspective into health workforce policies to ensure that healthcare workers receive fair treatment and equal pay.

The activities planned for International Nurses Day aim to foster discussion and action on gender equality, leadership, and innovation in nursing education and practice. Nurses play a vital role in healthcare systems, yet they often do not receive the recognition and investment they deserve in terms of education, jobs, and leadership opportunities. By addressing these issues head-on, we can create a more equitable and effective healthcare system for all.
