A group of businesses and industry lobbying groups have filed a lawsuit in the Eastern District of Texas to challenge a new US Labor Department rule that aims to extend overtime pay coverage to approximately 4 million workers. The regulation, which narrows an exemption to overtime pay requirements, represents a significant shift in policy without proper justification, argue the plaintiffs.

The lawsuit contends that the rule exceeded its authority under the Fair Labor Standards Act and violated the Administrative Procedure Act. The plaintiffs also argue that the Department failed to consider the reliance interests of businesses that would be impacted by the rule.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for both workers and employers across the country. It is part of a broader debate over labor policies and regulations, with some arguing that expanding overtime pay protections will benefit workers while others maintain that it will place undue burdens on businesses.
