Over 500 people are currently involved in rescue efforts on the Meizhou-Dabu highway in Canton, China, where a section of the highway collapsed around 02:10 local time. The accident occurred in an area of approximately 184.3 square meters and involved 24 trapped vehicles, but fortunately no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals were present. The death toll is at 48, with 30 injuries reported as well.

The causes of the collapse are still being investigated, but there are suspicions that heavy rains in the region may have played a role. Local officials have confirmed that there were no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals involved in this incident. Unfortunately, this tragedy is just one of several infrastructure-related accidents to occur in China recently. In December, three people died and four were injured when a section of a highway collapsed in Inner Mongolia.

The Chinese authorities are taking steps to investigate this latest collapse and prevent similar tragedies from occurring again in the future. While rescue efforts continue for those trapped and injured, it is important to remember that infrastructure-related accidents can be deadly and must be addressed promptly and thoroughly to ensure public safety.
