Renowned British scientist Peter Higgs, known for his groundbreaking theory of the Higgs boson, has passed away at the age of 94. The University of Edinburgh, where he worked for four decades, announced his peaceful passing on Monday, April 8, after a brief illness.

Higgs’ theory of the Higgs boson, proposed in 1964, was a fundamental contribution to the field of particle physics. It took nearly fifty years for experimental confirmation of this theory. The University of Edinburgh hailed him as a great teacher and mentor who inspired countless young scientists.

In 2013, Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics along with Francois Englert for their pioneering work on the theoretical framework that eventually led to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 at CERN. This discovery solidified the “standard model” of particle physics by explaining the origin of mass in the universe.

Dubbed the “God particle” for its pivotal role in the structure of matter, the Higgs boson remains a mysterious and elusive entity. Higgs’ family has requested privacy during this time of mourning. His legacy as a brilliant mind and dedicated educator will continue to inspire future generations of scientists.
