Alex Verdugo, the New York Yankees’ newest acquisition, has been making waves in his new clubhouse. After a four-game sweep in Houston to open the season, Verdugo described his teammates as a pack of “dawgs.” To celebrate Verdugo’s homers, his teammates have been barking loudly in the dugout like hungry canines.

Verdugo hit a go-ahead home run during a recent game against the Miami Marlins and was met with a barking mob in the dugout which included Giancarlo Stanton and Rizzo. Despite some benchings for not hustling and being late to the ballpark, Verdugo has transitioned well with the Yankees, feeling welcomed and able to be himself.

When asked what kind of dog he would be, Verdugo joked that it depends on his production in a game. He said they joke about starting as a baby chihuahua with a baby bark and gradually transforming into a big dog if they make an impact in the game. The team is having fun with the “dawgs” nickname and are enjoying the playful atmosphere created by it.

The “dawgs” compliment originated from Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Anthony Rizzo and others who are having fun with it. Rizzo even threw up “Arf, arf, arf” in response to the barking during one of their games together. The team is currently boasting a 10-2 record thanks to their strong offensive performance and solid defense on field.
