In the Oklahoma Throws Series meeting held in Ramona on Sunday, Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna made history by breaking the longest standing men’s world record in discus throwing. The 21-year-old athlete threw an incredible 74.35m, surpassing the previous record of 74.08m set by Jurgen Schult in 1986.

Alekna’s impressive performance was part of a series of six throws over 70m, which he completed with great determination. He began his competition with an opening throw of 72.21m before achieving a mark of 70.32m in the second round. In the third round, he secured his place as the fourth best discus thrower of all time with a mark of 72.89m.

Alekna continued to impress with throws of 70.51m and a record-breaking 74.35m in the fifth round, pointing to the implement as it flew through the air. His new world record puts him in the same category as his father, two-time Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna, who is currently third on the world all-time list with a throw of 73.88m from 2000.

This remarkable achievement by Mykolas Alekna came just one day after Cuba’s Yaime Perez set the longest women’s discus throw since 1989 with a mark of 73
