The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) elected Dr Emmanuelle Soubeyran as its new Director General during its 91st General Session held in Paris on May 28, 2024. This marks a significant milestone in WOAH’s commitment to global animal health.

Dr Soubeyran was chosen by the delegates through a secret ballot vote based on the “one country, one vote” rule. She will serve as the 8th Director General of WOAH and continue to advance animal health governance while promoting a safer and healthier future for both animals and humans.

The election of Dr Soubeyran follows the successful tenure of Dr Monique Eloit, who leaves behind a legacy of enhancing global cooperation to combat animal diseases. Under her leadership, WOAH strengthened its Members’ capacity and inclusivity, expanding support for veterinary paraprofessionals and community animal health workers. The Organisation also implemented data-driven programs such as the Observatory and the global database on animal antimicrobial use, ANIMUSE.

As WOAH celebrates its 100th anniversary, it remains committed to addressing complex challenges like zoonotic diseases and the sustainability of animal production through collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity.
