A research team from the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has discovered a new species of lizard with yellow bumps on its back and limbs, as well as curved toes. This new species, named Luc-toed lizard (Cyrtodactylus luci), is the 53rd species of the Gecko genus recorded in Vietnam and is currently only found in Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province. The discovery was recently published in the magazine Zookeys.

The Luc-toed lizard is unique in its morphological features and genetic differences from other geckos in its genus. It is active at night, clinging to cliffs or trees, and is commonly found in secondary karst forests with small and medium hardwood trees. This new discovery highlights the biodiversity of Vietnam and emphasizes the importance of studying and preserving unique species like the Luc-toed lizard.

The research team, led by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Truong, discovered the new species during a field survey of wildlife in the limestone mountain forests of Lao Cai province. The team continues to study the population and distribution of the Luc-toed lizard in neighboring areas, as well as its biological and ecological characteristics. This research aims to assess the conservation status of the species and provide valuable scientific information for species conservation efforts.

By understanding and protecting these unique species like the Luc-toed lizard, we can contribute to the conservation of Vietnam’s rich natural heritage.
