Over the next three years, 936 new prison beds will be built thanks to the efforts of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The total cost of the project is 536 million shekels and has been reported on by The Marker.

Treasury officials have insisted that the funds for this program come from Ben-Gvir’s department budget. This decision was met with opposition from many cabinet members, but after intense negotiations, a compromise was reached. Half of the program will be financed through the sequestering of budgets from all ministries, while the other half will come from the Defense Department budget.

The Department of Homeland Security will need to cover the costs of 225 new jobs in the Bureau of Prisons from its own budget after discussions and compromises were made to secure necessary funding for construction.
