A new specialty-equipped pediatric ambulance has been added to the Penn State Health Life Lion Critical Care Transport fleet, providing specialized care for ill or injured infants and children during transport. The ambulance, which was introduced on June 4, 2024, features advanced equipment such as a transport isolette for infants, a ventilator, and an enhanced oxygen system compared to a regular ambulance. With additional space in the patient compartment, up to five caregivers can provide care for patients.

The mobile intensive care unit offers the same advanced level of care as Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, the only freestanding children’s hospital and Level 1 trauma center for children in the region. The ambulance is staffed by an emergency medical technician, critical care paramedic, and critical care transport registered nurse. This highly-equipped ambulance is a valuable asset to the communities served by Penn State Health.

Funding from Children’s Miracle Network facilitated the purchase of the new ambulance, which replaced an older model in the Life Lion fleet. The team that staffs the ambulance around the clock plays a critical role in providing top-notch care to patients. Joelle’s mother shared her daughter’s story during a news conference, highlighting the importance of pediatric ambulances in transporting infants and children to receive lifesaving care.

Joella was transported to Penn State Health Children’s Hospital moments after her birth and has since recovered thanks to the skilled care provided by the medical team. The installation of this new pediatric ambulance is a significant advancement in enhancing critical care transport services offered by Penn State Health Life Lion Critical Care Transport fleet.
