North Charleston recently celebrated the grand opening of a brand new sports facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The $25 million North Charleston Sports Complex is a state-of-the-art facility that includes five regulation-size gymnasiums for basketball, volleyball, badminton, and other indoor athletics. It also features five tennis courts that meet official U.S. Tennis Association standards, a roller rink for street hockey and roller-skating, and a 25-meter competitive pool that complements the North Charleston Aquatic Center in Dorchester County.
The new facility replaces the previously standing Danny Jones Recreation Center, which underwent renovations to add more space and updates. North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess expressed gratitude towards the Danny Jones Recreation Center for its role in shaping his development as a man and believes the new facility will have a similar positive impact on the youth in the community. Burgess stated in an interview with WCSC that the facility provides an opportunity to nurture young athletes and build their minds.
The North Charleston Sports Complex will be free to use for most activities, but there will be a fee for using the pool. Tj Rostin, the director of Parks and Recreation for North Charleston, emphasized the city’s commitment to recreation and providing opportunities for exercise, fun, and community engagement. The facility aims to bring the community together and provide opportunities for everyone to participate in recreational activities.
While the complex will officially open to the public on April 1, the outdoor facilities such as the roller-skating rink and tennis courts are already available for use. The North Charleston Sports Complex serves as a hub for sports and recreation in the community, offering a range of facilities for residents to enjoy and stay active.
