Hennepin Health, Minnesota’s only county-owned health insurance program for individuals on medical assistance, has appointed Michael Herzing as its new CEO. The decision was made by the Hennepin County Board with a unanimous vote on June 4. With more than 35,000 members spread across three health plans, Hennepin Health operates with a budget of approximately $400 million as per its 2023 annual report.

Michael Herzing, who has been serving as the interim director of Hennepin Health since December, will take over as CEO. His annual salary will be $200,000. In his statement to the board, Herzing expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and the organization’s mission to enhance health outcomes and address disparities in care access. He believes in the significance of their work and is committed to making a meaningful impact.

Having joined Hennepin County in 2005, Herzing brings years of experience to his new position. Before assuming the interim director role, he held a director position in the human services department where he oversaw the access, aging, and disability services area for nearly a decade. His dedication to the community and passion for healthcare accessibility make him a fitting choice to lead Hennepin Health into the future.
