UUP leader Mike Nesbitt has been appointed as the new health minister, taking over from Robin Swann who is stepping down to run in the UK general election. Mr. Nesbitt, who has been an assembly member for Strangford since 2011 and served as party leader from 2012 to 2017, has been leading the health ministry during the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed the role when devolution was restored in February.
Doug Beattie, UUP leader, had previously indicated that Mr. Nesbitt would be replacing Mr. Swann as health minister. Finance spokesperson Steve Aiken, a former party leader, expressed confidence in Mr. Nesbitt’s abilities, calling him the best person for the job. However, he raised concerns about the rush to approve the budget without sufficient information on the funding coming in from the June monitoring round.
Mr. Aiken emphasized the importance of all political parties coming together to review additional funds potentially available and ensuring a comprehensive discussion and decision-making process before finalization of the budget. He plans to address these issues at an upcoming Northern Ireland Assembly finance committee meeting later in the week, seeking a more transparent and collaborative approach in managing finances and addressing financial challenges facing region.
In his new role as health minister, Mr. Nesbitt will have a challenging task ahead of him with Covid-19 still affecting Northern Ireland but also other financial challenges that need to be addressed carefully with collaboration from all stakeholders involved
