A two-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) has recently been opened at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, NY. The facility, which cost $2 million, is equipped with advanced video-electroencephalogram (EEG) technology and digital video monitors. The EMU is staffed by a team of specialists including epileptologists, neuroradiologists, nurses, social workers, and EEG technicians.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that there are approximately 215,000 New Yorkers living with active epilepsy, with more than 35,000 residing on Long Island alone. This new facility at Mount Sinai South Nassau provides specialized care for individuals living with epilepsy, offering a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment. Patients can expect to receive expert care from a multidisciplinary team of professionals dedicated to managing their condition effectively.

Patients admitted to the unit may need to remain awake for up to five days to undergo EEGs and other tests in order to pinpoint the cause of their epileptic seizures. The EMU offers a safe and controlled environment where patients can receive continuous monitoring while they undergo these tests. The advanced EEG technology used in the unit allows for precise and accurate diagnosis of epileptic conditions, allowing the medical team to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

The EMU also offers support services such as social workers who can provide counseling and guidance to patients and their families. Nurses are available around the clock to monitor patients’ vital signs and provide medication as needed. Epileptologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy and work closely with other members of the medical team to develop an effective treatment plan for each patient.

Overall, this new facility at Mount Sinai South Nassau provides much-needed specialized care for individuals living with epilepsy on Long Island. With its state-of-the-art equipment and multidisciplinary team of professionals, the EMU offers hope for those struggling with this debilitating condition.
