The upcoming college football season will witness several significant changes, with the NCAA approving new rules that will take effect in 2024. These modifications are aimed at enhancing the on-field product and making the game more closely resemble the NFL.

One of the key changes approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel is the introduction of a green dot on the back of a single player’s helmet on each team. This player will be able to communicate with a coach while on the field, with communication shutting off 15 seconds before the play clock expires. This move brings college football closer to the NFL in terms of in-game communication.

Another significant change is that college games will include a two-minute timeout similar to the NFL’s two-minute warning. The clock will stop at the two-minute mark of the second and fourth quarters, allowing for strategic decisions and game management. Other changes include tablets on sidelines for reviewing game film and different camera angles.

The penalty for horse-collar tackles in the tackle box has also been increased to a 15-yard penalty, giving coaches more opportunities to discuss tactics during timeouts. Additionally, coaches will have interviews with broadcast partners after every first and third quarter, adding an extra layer of excitement to these moments. While these changes may not provide any direct advantages to specific teams like Oklahoma State, having an experienced coach like Mike Gundy can help navigate these changes effectively.
