In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a car crashed into Wholesale Flooring Depot in Fort Lauderdale, causing significant damage to the building. The Broward Sheriff’s Office received a report around 3 a.m. of a car hitting a building in the area of SW 12 Avenue and SW 16th Street in Dania Beach. The driver of a 2014 Audi was speeding westbound on Sheridan Street when they hit a sign and crashed into the building.

Local resident Steven Deshazo heard the crash from a mile away on U.S. 1, describing it as sounding like a wrecking ball going through a building. When he arrived at the scene, he saw that parts of the wall surrounding the garage door had collapsed due to impact, and witnesses reported seeing debris flying through the air after the crash. The owner of Wholesale Flooring Depot, Sharon Ciavvato, expressed frustration as this is the third time her business has been damaged by such incidents within two years. She mentioned that her insurance company is fed up with these incidents and urged city officials to take action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

According to reports, another driver went airborne after hitting railroad tracks on Sheridan Street in March 2021 and crashed into Wholesale Flooring Depot before fleeing from the scene after removing their license plate as the car caught fire. However, they were later caught and charged for their actions. As Deshazo points out, “This is not just about one incident; it’s about three incidents.” He called for stronger enforcement measures to ensure that drivers do not drive recklessly on public roads or near buildings like this one again.

CBS News Miami interviewed witnesses who spoke about what they saw during this incident, including how fast-moving cars can cause serious harm when colliding with buildings or pedestrians on busy streets like Sheridan Street in Fort Lauderdale.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into this incident while also reminding everyone driving on public roads that speeding can be deadly and should never be taken lightly.
