Private Spacecraft Odysseus, built by Intuitive Machines in Houston, has successfully landed on the Moon, marking the first time a private company achieved this milestone. Meanwhile, Japan’s SLIM (Smart Lunar Research Lander) has returned to service for the second time after weathering the long lunar night for the second time in a row. Although extreme conditions are starting to impact the ship, with some temperature sensors and battery cells showing signs of malfunction.
The SLIM mission was launched last September and achieved a soft landing on the Moon on January 19, making Japan the 5th country to accomplish this feat, alongside the Soviet Union, USA, China, and India. Despite landing upside down initially due to technical issues with its navigation system, SLIM managed to achieve its basic mission goals of landing accurately and collecting data. The mission team put SLIM into hibernation ahead of the two-week lunar night to conserve power and protect against damage from extreme temperatures.
In addition to its scientific research goals, SLIM also deployed two small rovers that explored different areas of the lunar surface. The rovers were equipped with cameras that captured stunning images of the Moon’s terrain and sent them back to Earth for analysis. Overall, SLIM was successful in achieving its mission objectives despite facing challenges during its first run.
