For over seven decades, Montana has experienced significant transformations, witnessing an increase in population and undergoing changes in towns, cities, and landscapes. These alterations have been both subtle and dramatic, ranging from the opening of new stores and schools to the complete overhaul of entire neighborhoods. Thanks to new technology such as the Landscape Explorer, individuals can now see the extent of these changes not only in Montana but across 17 states west of the Mississippi.

The Landscape Explorer project is a collaboration between the University of Montana, Working Lands For Wildlife, Montana NRCS, and Intermountain West Joint Venture that offers an interactive map that compares early satellite images from 70 years ago with more modern images. This tool showcases the drastic changes that have occurred in the western part of the U.S. over the years, providing insight into how these landscapes have evolved. The website also allows users to zoom in and explore transformations in their own neighborhoods, serving as an educational resource that offers a glimpse into how our world has evolved and continues to change over time.

In addition to using tools like the Landscape Explorer to explore changes in the landscape, individuals can also test their knowledge by identifying Montana lakes from Google Earth images. From underground caves to secret gardens, the U.S. is filled with hidden gems waiting to be discovered and explored, showcasing the diversity and beauty of the country’s landscapes. With so much to see and discover, there’s no better time than now to take a closer look at Montana and its many secrets!
