Ecuadorian police have forcibly removed former vice president Jorge Glas, who had recently been granted political asylum by the Mexican government. The incident occurred at the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where Ecuadorian authorities ordered the immediate capture of Glas despite prior arrangements for safe passage to Mexico City. In a dramatic and unauthorized operation, the police broke into the Mexican embassy, violating international law by forcibly taking Glas away in a van.

The Mexican government, led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, condemned the violation of diplomatic space and announced the suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador. Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretary emphasized the sacred right to asylum and instructed all diplomatic staff to leave the country. The tension between the two countries escalated following controversial statements by López Obrador and the expulsion of the Mexican ambassador from Ecuador.

Jorge Glas was once a powerful politician in Ecuador but fell from grace due to corruption allegations and convictions. As a key member of Rafael Correa’s administration, he held significant positions in government overseeing strategic sectors like oil, mining, and telecommunications. Despite his earlier successes, Glas’s involvement in corruption scandals tarnished his reputation and led to multiple convictions. His decision to seek asylum in Mexico further strained relations between Mexico and Ecuador.

The clash between López Obrador and Noboa reflects their contrasting political backgrounds and leadership styles. While López Obrador has a long history in leftist politics and enjoys strong popular support, Noboa’s unexpected rise to power was fueled by external events and heightened security measures. The diplomatic standoff between Mexico and Ecuador highlights the challenges of international relations and the complexities of asylum rights in cases of political persecution. The future of Glas, Correa, and Ecuadorian politics remains uncertain amidst this diplomatic fallout.

The incident at the Mexican Embassy in Quito has sparked outrage among human rights organizations worldwide who condemn such actions that undermine international law’s sanctity.

The International Court of Justice is set to hear a case brought by Mexico against Ecuador seeking accountability for its actions that violated diplomatic space.

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has yet to comment on why he ordered Glass’s capture despite prior arrangements made with him.

Mexico will continue its efforts to hold other countries accountable for their actions that undermine democratic values worldwide.
