For John Bricker of Harrisburg, the pain of losing his son Greg, who was born with a heart defect and passed away at the age of three and a half, still lingers more than 40 years later. His twin brother, Eric, also feels the weight of this loss and honors Greg’s memory through participating in the March for Babies event.

The March of Dimes raises funds for research, programs, and education to ensure that mothers and babies receive the best start possible. Families like the Brickers find solace in participating in this event and supporting others who are facing similar challenges. The organization aims to raise awareness about the high rate of preterm births in the United States, with Pennsylvania earning a C+ grade in this area. The U.S. is considered one of the most dangerous developed nations for childbirth, with one in 10 babies born prematurely and about 700 women dying each year from pregnancy-related complications.

John Bricker has been participating in the March of Dimes walk for 50 years, showing his commitment to helping families in need. His dedication to this cause has inspired many, including his son Eric, who admires his father’s commitment to complete strangers. John views his involvement in the event as a way to prevent others from experiencing the same pain he and his wife endured.
