On Sunday, a 23-year-old man was shot by Ocala police and is currently in critical condition. The incident took place after the man fled from The Vines Hospital, a mental health clinic where his family members were trying to check him into before he started acting erratically.

Ocala officers responded to the scene at around 12:21 p.m. and located the man near the 5500 block of SW 27th Avenue, about a mile and a half south of the hospital. Upon making contact with the man, police determined that he was an immediate threat and proceeded to shoot him, resulting in critical injuries.

The man was rushed to an HCA hospital for treatment, while no officers sustained any harm during the shooting. The exact number of officers involved in the shooting and the number of shots fired are not yet known. An investigation into the incident is underway, with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement involved in the process as per standard protocol. Ocala police have stated that further details will be shared as they become available.
