Major League Baseball has suspended Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Génesis Cabrera and New York Mets pitcher Yohan Ramírez for three games each, and suspended Mets manager Carlos Mendoza for one game, according to senior vice president Michael Hill.
Cabrera was punished for a benches-clearing incident during Toronto’s game against Tampa Bay that occurred on-field. Meanwhile, Ramírez received discipline for intentionally throwing at Milwaukee’s Rhys Hoskins during a game against the Brewers.
Both pitchers have chosen to appeal their suspensions, meaning they will be held until the appeals process is completed. Mendoza served his suspension during Sunday’s game against Milwaukee, marking his third game as a major league manager.
The incident involving Cabrera took place in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he exchanged words with José Caballero and pushed the Tampa Bay shortstop. This led to a benches-clearing situation and Cabrera being ejected from the game. On the other hand, Ramírez’s actions were triggered by a slide by Rhys Hoskins that resulted in him hitting two runs early in the game. His pitch to Hoskins in the seventh inning sailed well behind him, leading to his ejection from the game. Ramírez later claimed he did not intentionally throw at Hoskins.
