Major League Baseball has announced plans to discipline umpire Pat Hoberg as a result of an investigation into a potential violation of sports gambling policies. The commissioner’s office released a statement on Friday stating that Hoberg has chosen to appeal the penalty.

Hoberg’s decision to appeal the determination has led MLB to withhold further comments until the appeal process is completed. While MLB’s investigation found no evidence of compromised or manipulated games officiated by Hoberg, the league determined that disciplinary action was necessary.

A 37-year-old Hoberg made his Major League Baseball debut in 2014 and joined the full-time staff in 2017. During his time as an umpire, he received a perfect grade when calling balls and strikes during Game 2 of the 2022 World Series between the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. He also worked as an umpire in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and was selected to officiate the “Field of Dreams Game” in August 2021, the first major league game held in his home state of Iowa.

Prior to his career as a big league umpire, Hoberg worked in the minors, including stints in the Pacific Coast League, Texas League, and Florida State League.
