Ursa Major Technologies has landed a contract with the US Navy to produce a new 3D-printed solid rocket motor for the Standard Missile (SM) program. Based in Colorado, the company will be responsible for designing a new version of the Mk-104 dual rocket motor currently used in SM-2, SM-3, and SM-6 missiles. To streamline production, Ursa Major will employ its groundbreaking manufacturing technology known as “Lynx.”

“Lynx is a revolutionary technology that utilizes additive manufacturing to create efficient and reliable solid rocket motors,” said CEO Joe Laurienti. “We are proud to partner with the Navy on this critical initiative and look forward to working with them to develop the next generation of Mk-104 solid rocket motors.”

Ursa Major’s collaboration with PEO-IWS, Naval Air Warfare Center, and Naval Surface Warfare Center will help advance this effort. The United States faces a heightened demand for solid rocket motors due to their use in various missile systems. A shortage of domestic suppliers has added urgency to this need, particularly given Ukraine’s conflict.

Captain Thomas Seigenthaler, director of PEO-IWS, highlighted the importance of this effort as a top priority for the Navy. He praised Ursa Major’s innovative approach to addressing manufacturing challenges and saw Lynx as a vital tool in overcoming production bottlenecks and increasing efficiency in rocket motor manufacturing for critical national security needs.

The Lynx technology was introduced in 2023 and aims to transform how solid rocket motors are produced by eliminating costly retooling and retraining. By leveraging additive manufacturing and versatile tooling systems, Lynx enables scalable production without significant delays.
