In Louisiana, a judge has ruled that Jacoby Johnson, a former Louisiana Tech student accused of stabbing four women outside the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center on November 13, 2023, will be admitted to the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System in Jackson, Louisiana. This decision was made after recent psychological assessments suggested that Johnson may not be mentally competent to stand trial.
Johnson’s case has gone through several legal proceedings in recent months. Initially, District Court Judge Chet Traylor deemed him competent to stand trial in a sanity hearing earlier this year. However, further evaluation was recommended by doctors following recent psychological reviews. The Second Circuit Court of Appeal overturned the initial competency ruling as a result.
At present, Johnson remains at the mental health facility in Jackson until professionals can determine whether he is fit to stand trial or if he is incompetent. Another sanity review is scheduled for July 16 during which the court will reassess his mental condition to determine the next steps in the judicial process.
