On April 27, police officers conducted a search at the home of 85-year-old Sakhalin human rights activist Mark Cooperman. The search was related to allegations of “calls for extremism” under the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code. The reason for initiating a criminal case was a telegram mailing where Cooperman allegedly sent a document titled “Plan for Western participation in regime change in Russia. Humanitarian occupation” to an unidentified group of people, which he denies ever seeing or sending. During the search, all electronic devices in the house were seized by security forces.
Cooperman, who is disabled and unable to walk, was initially considered a suspect but was officially charged on the afternoon of April 28 without being brought in for questioning. Along with Cooperman, searches were also conducted at the homes of nine colleagues from the human rights organization “For Human Rights” on Sakhalin, who are involved in the case as witnesses.
