Jonathan Granirer, a standup comedian who struggles with chronic depression, has found a unique way to help others work through their emotional pain. He turns his own experiences into a comedy routine that showcases the power of laughter as medicine. Jonathan’s father, David Granirer, is also a standup comedian who has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder.

David’s journey with mental health began when he attempted suicide at the age of 17 and ended up in a psychiatric ward. After receiving treatment, he created the Stand Up for Mental Health program where he travels to different cities in the United States, Australia, and Canada to teach standup comedy to individuals with mental illness. Through comedy, participants are able to reframe their painful past experiences into material for laughter, leading to a sense of empowerment and pride in what they have overcome.

Audiences around the world are flocking to comedy clubs to witness this unique approach to mental health. David’s goal is to show that individuals with mental illness are just normal people who sometimes need a little extra support. Through humor, he hopes to bring laughter, hope, and a sense of empowerment to both the comedians and the audience members experiencing the show.

David’s personal journey with mental health challenges has shown him the therapeutic power of humor. He believes that while we cannot change the past, we can find humor in our experiences and get the last laugh. As he continues to travel and teach Stand Up for Mental Health classes, he is providing a space for individuals to find healing and growth through the power of comedy.
