Following reports of deaths and illnesses potentially linked to dietary supplements produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical, health officials in Japan have taken action. The company’s factory in Osaka was raided by authorities, who inspected the facility where supplements containing red yeast rice, or “beni koji,” were manufactured.

In response to the situation, the company has recalled the supplements containing red yeast rice. Despite reports of health problems surfacing in 2023, the ingredient has been used for years in various products. “Beni koji” contains Monascus purpureus, a red mold commonly used as a food coloring.

The recall was initiated after official medical reports were received, indicating a delay in taking action. The supplements were available for purchase without a prescription and were sold in large quantities over the past few years. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of strict regulations and oversight in the healthcare industry to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

The Ministry of Health has issued a warning about Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s products following reports of five deaths and 114 hospitalizations connected to their products. The cause of the illnesses is currently unknown and an investigation is underway to determine exact reasons behind them. A Chinese consumers association has also raised concerns about the safety of Kobayashi products, urging consumers to stop using them.
