North Korea’s official media reported the death of Kim Ki Nam, a former head of regime propaganda who played a crucial role in creating the cult of personality around the Kim dynasty. According to KCNA news agency, Kim Ki Nam passed away on Tuesday at the age of 94 due to his advanced age and multiple organ dysfunction.

Kim Ki Nam was known for leading Pyongyang’s propaganda department for decades, where he helped create the cult of personality that still exists today. He was described by North Korean state media as a veteran of the Party and revolution, a prestigious theorist, and a prominent political activist. In recent years, his functions as Pyongyang’s chief propagandist were taken over by Kim Yo Jong, the current leader’s influential sister.

The Kim dynasty, founded by communist leader Kim Il Sung, has ruled North Korea with an iron fist for three generations. Analysts have compared Kim Ki Nam to Nazi Germany’s propaganda chief Goebbels, attributing many of the regime’s propaganda and agitation strategies to him. Despite his passing, Kim Ki Nam’s influence on North Korean propaganda and political landscape remains significant.
